Gilan Province, located in the north of the Islamic Republic of Iran, is one of the country’s strategic and leading provinces in the fields of economy, logistics, tourism and regional cooperation. The province, with its center in the city of Rasht, is located on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea and adjacent to the Republic of Azerbaijan, and is known as a vital link in the chain connecting Iran with the Caspian Sea countries, the Caucasus, Russia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
Strategic Position in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC):
Gilan Province plays an important role in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and, as the regional logistics hub in the North-South Transit Corridor, is becoming one of the main axes of multimodal transit between the southern ports of Iran, the Caucasus, the Caspian Sea and the ports of Russia.
The ports of Astara, Caspian, and Bandar Anzali, along with the Rasht-Bandar Caspian railway, the Rasht-Astara railway (under construction), the Anzali Free Zone, and the Rasht-Qazvin-Tehran highway network, have provided a set of key infrastructure to facilitate trade exchanges and transit of goods on this strategic route.
